Be better at bioprocessing

When I first started out in biotech, I knew nothing.  And I mean absolutely nothing.  I remember when I first interviewed to become a bioreactor operator.  The interviewer asked me several technical questions that I wasn’t able to answer, even though I had a degree in biology.  I didn’t get the questions wrong because I was stupid or unprepared – it was because I truly had no idea what to expect, what to look for or who to turn to for help.  I didn’t know what biotech was about, or anyone in the industry.  Frankly, I didn’t know what I didn’t know.  Even though I failed to answer the technical questions, I was fortunate enough to get the job, and to be taken under the wing of some very smart coworkers.

The first was my director, an engineer with a deep understanding of the way systems work and how they are validated.  He showed me the technical aspects of upstream manufacturing, how to operate, how to document, how to develop and optimize processes, how to validate new systems.

The second was a downstream manufacturing associate, who instructed me in the world of chromatography, TFF, analytics, and how all the pieces fit together.  She had a keen sense of how the business of biotech worked, too.

After several years of hands-on work, I moved to a consulting role.  I witnessed first-hand how 100+ different companies operate, from biotech start-ups to globally recognized pharma brands.  And I developed a network of experts I can rely on.

The opportunity to get this breadth of experience is rare.  From the conversations I’ve had with many people at many companies, most could use the same guidance – it was just never available to them.

But the internet has changed all of that.  It allows for connectivity across geographies, across age groups and across skill levels.  It allows for knowledge to be shared in a way that wasn’t possible before.  With this power at our fingertips, I want to share the knowledge I earned over the past decade.

So I’m unveiling Biotech Magic, a bioprocessing educational platform.

The goal is to give you full access to everything I wish I had known when I first started out in biotech.  I want to help you establish a foundation of knowledge so you can understand why you do what you do, what other people and companies do, what your options for growth and development are, and optimal pathways you can take in your biotech career. And if you are currently seeking a job, this platform will boost your know-how past the competition.

There are other places where you can dive deep into the technical details of how to operate, validate, or optimize bioprocesses.  While Biotech Magic will teach you some hard skills and provide links to further research, I want it to be much more than that.  I want it to be a central spot where you can access clear and concise information that simply isn’t available anywhere else.  A place where – when you don’t know anyone in real life with the answer – you can ask a question and have it answered by real industry experts.  I want this knowledge to elevate you to make better decisions, make more money, and make a positive impact on the space.

Want to learn industry best practices?

With insight into 100+ biotech companies, we know what works best, and what the best are doing.

Want to understand what you need to excel?

Learn the biological, physical, engineering and business concepts you need in your toolbox to become a bioprocessing great.

Want to know all the mistakes I made so you don’t make them too?

You’ll learn exactly what to avoid.

The knowledge you will gain from Biotech Magic is impossible to learn anywhere else.  Not even a graduate degree in Biotechnology will set you up for this level of success.  This information is 10x better, 10x more concise and practical, and the cost will be ~100x lower. And once you sign up, you can easily access everything from your phone, laptop or tablet.

A basic list of the contents of the platform are below.  This is not all-encompassing and the beauty of the platform is that if there’s any content you feel is missing, you can ask for and receive it.

  • Lessons and quizzes for the entirety of a standard bioprocess:
    • Media and Buffer Prep
    • Direct Flow Filtration
    • Cell Expansion
    • Cell Production
    • Harvest / Clarification
    • Chromatography
    • Tangential Flow Filtration
    • Virus Clearance
    • Formulation
    • Fill-Finish

Check out what some of our beta testers had to say about the program:

Rachel S – Manufacturing Associate

I struggled hard after graduation to find a job.  I had a biotech degree but it seemed like employers were only looking for people with experience.  I managed to score a few interviews but I got ghosted.  Someone mentioned Biotech Magic on Reddit, and it was free so I thought why not.  After reading the first few sections, I realized that there was a whole world of knowledge I had missed in undergrad.  I saw that biotech is basically just applied biology and engineering to help develop new drugs for patients.  I updated my resume and applied for more jobs like one of the free articles says.  Pretty quickly I got another interview, and I was shocked when they gave me an offer of employment one week later!!  My interviewers (now co-workers) told me that the passion I brought to the table is what made them pick me.  I am a naturally enthusiastic person but I think Biotech Magic helped a lot in channeling that passion, and giving me the language to excel.  The program itself I would describe as making the complex very simple.  I don’t mean watered down or overly simple, but biotech is really challenging to understand and the courses and quizzes break it down in an easy to understand way.  I saw how things actually work in the industry instead of just what my college courses instructed me.

Kristoffer R – R&D Lab Assistant

After entering Biotech as a fresh graduate, I realized that many courses in college didn’t prepare me for the intricacies of the field. Even after gaining experience, there was still so much for me to learn and grow from. After coming across this site, I knew it would be beneficial and advantageous to access it. Biotech Magic is an enriching website when it comes to trying to understand Bioprocessing. The courses and topics provided effectively illustrate the step by step process of manufacturing from media/buffer prep and cell expansion in Upstream processing to chromatography and down to fill Finish in Downstream. The well structured courses are also followed up with quizzes to ensure and enforce understanding. I’ve come out with a clearer and better lens on how everything works. Biotech Magic is perfect for individuals fresh out of college as well as individuals still establishing themselves in Biotech who want to have an edge and deeper comprehension. Core fundamental concepts and unique complexities are accessible through Biotech Magic that can prepare you for that job interview, what to perform/avoid on the floor, and appreciation of Bioprocessing. Through my time learning from the Biotech Magic, I now know answers to questions I had and have gaps of knowledge filled in.
